Koh Samui has been settled for a long time according to 1,500 year-old maps from the Chinese Ming dynasty. Fishing and later coconuts have been the major sorce of income on Koh Samui. It is characterized by beaches of powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters.
Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand and is surrounded by more than 60 other islands, some small and inhabited, some bigger, such as Koh Phangan, Koh Tao (divers' island), Koh Nang Yuan and Ang Thong Island, the National Marine Park.
Lamai Beach is the second-largest tourist centre on the island. The beach is a little bit more rough and the water is deeper than at Chaweng. It's an excellent location for swimming and has a well-known nightlife. Lamai can be explored by foot as the area is not as large as Chaweng. Hinta-Hinyai is at the southern end of Lamai and is famous for its strangely shaped rock formations.
How you get there:
When you arrive on Koh Samui, take a private taxi or shuttle bus to Lamai Beach, get off at Hinta-Hinyai.
